(For those of you that don't know the history, and for those that were there and have been with us ever since)

Folks, we are about to come upon a very significant milepost in our journey here. As November 23rd approaches, it's really starting to sink in what we are about to do. If there were ever a time I'd like to freeze in order to really savor the sweetness of the moment, it is this one. What began 35 years ago, and has spanned generations of Clevelanders - this force, this movement which has survived all of the ups and downs of many changing and uncertain times - Cleveland Reggae, is about to see a very life-affirming event take place.

I-tal is one of Cleveland's very first homegrown reggae bands, and indeed the one most known for spreading the reggae vibration throughout the Midwest and eastern part of the country back in the late 70s and throughout the 90s. Many people's first exposure to live reggae music can be traced back to that group, as I-tal became a top draw in the Cleveland (and Ohio) music scene, which up until that point, had been dominated by rock. I-tal wove a tapestry of trippy tribal beats; roots reggae infused with 60s psychedelic rock and more than a modest helping of blues - all under the guidance and direction of "Papa" Dave Smeltz, one of the most powerful voices in Cleveland's music history, period. The band drew its inspiration directly from the music that was bubbling and overflowing out of Jamaica in the mid 70s, and even had its christening on the island. As reggae gained worldwide acclaim, I-tal definitely held down top honors on the local front, and built an almost cult-like following. (Who remembers reggae Wednesdays at Peabody's?)
I-tal went on to have several incarnations after the original group splintered in 1983, and over the years, spawned new bands that spun off and added to the vibrant and healthy reggae scene in Cleveland.

First Light was born out of that energy. Expanding upon the vast array of influences; adding elements of jazz, funk, gospel, blues, classic rock  and even grunge - this band took reggae to a whole different level throughout the mid 80s and 90s, and carried forward on the momentum that I-tal had started, again, becoming a major player in the region and a staple of Cleveland's live music scene.
I don't think it would be unfair to say that, in the final analysis, First Light could have helped cut the way for groups like the Chili Peppers, Sublime, 311, Easy Star and so on, even though never reaching the same level of national attention. Over the years we had the honor of sharing the stage with many of reggae music's legends; such as, The Wailers, Toots & The Maytals, Jimmy Cliff, Mighty Diamonds, Black Uhuru and Steel Pulse, (to name a few) and quite a few non-reggae artists like The Neville Brothers, Vernon Reid, The Clash and Meat Loaf
At the time we were just doing what we loved to do, and were having a real good time doing it. We never realized then, what it was we were building upon - a legacy.

Now, we've truly come full circle. For the first time ever - the original group that started it all and the band that broke away to make its own name will share the same stage and partake of the sweet vibe that we all helped to cultivate and spread in Cleveland and beyond.
I'm proud to be associated with all of these guys - brothers that I have grown up with and have learned so much from. And to think; that after all these years, we get the chance, the blessing - to come back around and re-visit that magic place, where the stars aligned and the chemistry worked - the place where it all began, and celebrate not only the music and the history, but also the camaraderie. What Jah has joined together... you know? After all we've been through; collectively and separately, the fact that we're all still around is nothing short of miraculous! The depth of gratitude I feel has no word to describe it.

So many of you have come along for the ride, and it has really added something to our lives and made us feel a part of something greater in this town - this community. A lot of you have raised your kids with us. I love to hear all the stories and memories that so many have shared.

As we gather together to give thanks and celebrate family next week, I hope everyone who is able will come out to help us capture this moment and celebrate the shared history that is a part of all of us. Let's take a trip back, even as we move forward, and we'll forever enshrine it in the "Rock Hall" of our memories.

Cleveland Reggae Family, Thank you ALL!

Thank you everybody! It was a beautiful family reunion/full circle celebration in the neighborhood where it all started. We appreciate all of you for hanging with us all these years. It has truly been an amazing journey as we have made these memories together along the way. What a blessing!

Let's hold on to this feeling and keep the Light shining in our lives. And who knows? Maybe we'll get the chance to meet again down the road.
